DIY Dream: demand for at-home treatments soars under lockdown says Shoprite

THE WHAT? South Africa’s Shoprite has seen a surge in demand for DIY beauty treatments, according to a report published by Reuters.

THE DETAILS Shoprite and sister chains Pick n Pay and Checkers have seen sales soar across the beauty category, with home hair color, ethnic hair care (comprising extensions, relaxers and conditioners), nail polish, skin care and shaving products proving particularly popular.

THE WHY? While the government started to ease lockdown measures at the start of the month, hair salons and beauty parlours remain shut, leading to brisk sales of at-home solutions. Shoprite also attributed the increase to the ‘lipstick effect’ whereby people spend on little luxuries in times of economic turmoil.
